Ethnography: Theory, Practice, Critique | Humanities & Social Sciences

Ethnography: Theory, Practice, Critique

What is ethnography? How do we practice ethnography? What makes something ethnographic?
In this seminar-style course, we frame ethnography at the intersections of theory, practice and critique. This course intends to focus on ethnography as an investigatory method, a writing practice, a social/political critique, and a disciplinary craft at the cusp of transitions. We engage critically with classic and contemporary ethnographies and the debates that have shaped perspectives on ethnography and the ‘ethnographic’. The goal is to dwell on the messiness, complexities, contradictions, and possibilities that ethnography has carried within and through itself in anthropology.
