Professor Jayati Ghosh
Much was promised in terms of "achhe din": better deals for farmers, workers and most of all for the youth from aspirational middle classes. So far, few of these expectations have been met. What is worse, public spending has moved in the opposite direction, with big cuts in health and education spending and in expenditure that affects farmers and rural labourers, women and disadvantaged groups. There have even been cuts in areas that are the focus of major government slogans, like sanitation ("Swacch Bharat). So what is the economic strategy driving this and will it actually deliver in terms of better outcomes for most people?
