The MA programme in Culture, Society, Thought (two-year full-time) at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences began in 2024.
Salient features:
This program is envisaged as a taught, interdisciplinary master’s programme.
Students will be trained to critically examine aspects of contemporaneity through the disciplines of Sociology, Literature, Philosophy, and History as core disciplines, focusing on the themes of culture, society, and thought.
It trains students in diverse theoretical and methodological approaches as a way of reflecting on the contemporary world.
Graduates from the program will also be eligible to join the doctoral program at IIT Delhi or other doctoral programs in any country to further their research interests. Those who maintain the CGPA recommended by the Institute (currently 8.0) may apply directly to the doctoral program at IIT Delhi, in accordance with the Institute's rules.
Graduates will have the training to apply for jobs in a range of government and non-governmental organisations, research institutes, and think tanks. They will also be able to apply for roles in media, publishing, journalism, advocacy, social entrepreneurship organisations, and development consulting firms.
Programme Duration:
The duration of the MA in Culture, Society, Thought is 4 semesters (24 months).
Admission Process:
Candidates may be admitted to the MA CST programme either by qualifying in any GATE XH exam, or through a written entrance examination conducted by the HSS Department at IIT Delhi; detailed eligibility criteria will be posted on the Institute's PG admission page. Candidates qualifying on the basis of the GATE score/written examination will then be interviewed by a panel of HSS faculty.
Candidates in the final year of their study programmes and who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the third week of July 2026, are eligible to apply for admission. For shortlisting purposes, their performance up to the preceding semester (the preceding year, if the programmes are year-based) will be considered. Their admission will be provisional, subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria once their final qualifying examination results are announced.
