MA programme in Culture, Society, Thought (two-year Full time), at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is being offered from July 2024.
Salient features:
- This program is envisaged as a taught, interdisciplinary master’s programme.
- Students will be trained to critically examine aspects of contemporaneity through the disciplines of Sociology, Literature, Philosophy as core disciplines focussing on the thematic of culture, society, and thought.
- It trains students in diverse theoretical and methodological approaches as a way of reflecting on the contemporary world.
- Graduates from the program will also be eligible to join the doctoral program at IIT Delhi or other doctoral programs in any country to further their research interests. Those who maintain a CGPA as recommended by the Institute (currently, 8.0) will be able to directly apply for the doctoral program at IIT Delhi as per Institute rules.
- Graduates will have the training to apply for jobs in a range of government ad non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and think tanks. They will also be able to apply to jobs in media, publishing, journalism, advocacy, social entrepreneurship organizations, and development consultancy firms.
Eligibility:
The following academic qualifications will be the eligibility criteria for admission.
- Graduates with BA degree in any discipline: 55% marks or equivalent CGPA.
- Graduates of all other streams (e.g., B.Tech., B.Sc., B.Com., B.Des., B.Ed.): First division for all others streams of graduation.
- For SC/ST/PwD category candidates, minimum performance in the qualifying degree is relaxed by 5%.
- Graduates of 3-year and 4-year UG programme are both eligible for the programme.
- No credit waiver is to be given to graduates of 4-year UG programs.
- B.Tech. Advanced Standing students of IIT Delhi are allowed.
- Qualifying degree performance is computed by aggregating performance over all the semesters/years of the qualifying degree. Taking into account all subjects including languages and subsidiaries, all years combined).
These are Institute minimum requirements, and the Department can specify higher short-listing criteria than what is specified here.
Programme Duration:
The duration of MA in Culture, Society, Thought is 4 semesters (24 months).
Admission Process:
The admission process includes a Written Test and Interview.
- Performance in written exam held by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences or GATE score in any XH subject.
- Candidates shortlisted on the basis of written exam/GATE Score will be invited for interview organized by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. The written/oral examination will include evaluation of analytical abilities; basic numerical and logical reasoning skills; and reading and comprehension (check detailed syllabus and sample questions).
- Candidates in the final year of their study programmes and who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the third week of July 2024, are eligible to apply for admission. For short-listing purposes, their performance till the preceding semester (preceding year, if the programmes are year based) would be considered, but their admission would be provisional, subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria after their final qualifying examination results are announced.
