Call for Papers: Winter School on “CHANGING LOCAL LIFE-WORLDS”

Winter School (19-23 February 2024)
Deadline: 20 December 2023.

In many parts of India, members of indigenous communities find their societies rapidly changing. The transformations are manifold and changes in the domains of economy and environment, education and religion correspond to and reinforce one another.

The title of this Winter School is ambiguous. It could also be read as a mere description of the fact that life-worlds are changing, leaving the question of agency open. But it could suggest also that somebody is doing the changing. Indeed many people and institutions seem to want indigenous communities to change; school teachers, politicians, NGOs, policy makers, (international) companies, administrators, missionaries, they all seem to have an idea where that change should lead to. In other words they have their own idea of development. And for sure they have their own motives. Indigenous voices and opinions do not figure so frequently in these discourses and practices of change. However, obviously there exist many different views about contemporary transformations, notions of a “good life” and the future among the various indigenous communities.

In this Winter-School we especially invite students who intend to conduct ethnographic fieldwork for their PhD research in this field. An international group of experienced teachers and researchers from different academic backgrounds (anthropologists, sociologists and others) will discuss selected topics in their lectures and seminar sessions. We will also include societal stakeholders to join the discussions, such as social workers and members of local communities. Next to the lectures and seminars provided by the teachers there will be sufficient room to discuss the research ideas of the students and the anticipated prospects and challenges of their future research projects.
